Gasification : Succeeding with Small-Scale Systems

Description

A small-scale gasifier can provide off-grid electricity and motive power on demand using waste garden prunings and wood scraps. The technology, which is based on the ancient principles of charcoal production, flourished one hundred years ago until oil became cheap. In this book, energy engineer and UK gasification researcher Dr Andrew Rollinson explores the science, history, and potential of small-scale biomass gasifiers, along with providing detailed explanations on how to operate one successfully. For a readership which has to contend with dwindling fossil fuel reserves, increased energy prices, climate change, mountains of waste, and the modern version of a small-scale gasifier system, this book provides a helping hand. It will be relevant to those who want to assess whether the technology is right for them, but also serves as an operational guide for the gasifier operator, explaining what can go wrong, why, and how to achieve long-term operational success. Full colour. 170 pages.

Healing the Angry Brain : How Understanding the Way Your Brain Works Can Help You Control Anger and Aggression

Description

What happens to a person's brain when they become angry? Anger is an instinctive yet complex emotional reaction that affects everyone differently. People whose brains are wired for anger may become angry at a moment's notice, act impulsively on their anger, regret their behavior afterwards, and fly into dangerous rages that leave them feeling out of control. Calming the Angry Brain examines how the limbic system affects the way people process anger and why some people are predisposed to anger, while others are able to remain calm in aggravating situations. Readers learn how to change their patterns of thinking so that they become less likely to experience extreme levels of anger and more in control of their behavior when they do become angry. By understanding the six natural stages of emotionality: system activation, modulation, planning, taking emotion-influenced action, evaluation, and system deactivation, readers can come to terms with possible problems at each stage of processing. The book then offers guidance for taking charge of anger and learning new ways to rewire the brain so that anger is measured and manageable, not destructive.

On the Name pdf

Jacques Derrida,Thomas Dutoit: On the Name

On the Name

Description

"The name: What does one call thus? What does one understand under the name of name? And what occurs when one gies a name? What does one give then? One does not offer a thing, one delivers nothing, and still something comes to be, which comes down to giving that which one does not have, as Plotinus said of the Good. What happens, above all, when it is necessary to sur-name, renaming there where, precisely, the name comes to be found lacking? What makes the proper name into a sort of sur-name, pseudonym, or cryptonym at once singular and singularly untranslatable?" Jacques Derrida thus poses a central problem in contemporary language, ethics, and politics, which he addresses in a liked series of the three essays. Passions: "An Oblique Offering" is a reflection on the question of the response, on the duty and obligation to respond, and on the possibility of not responding-which is to say, on the ethics and politics of responsibility. Sauf le nom (Post Scriptum) considers the problematics of naming and alterity, or transcendence, raised inevitably by a rigorous negative theology. Much of the text is organized around close readings of the poetry of Angelus Silesius. The final essay, Khora, explores the problem of space or spacing, of the word khora in Plato's Tmaeus. Even as it places and makes possible nothing less than the whole world, khora opens and dislocates, displaces, all the categories that govern the production of that world, from naming to gender. In addition to readers in philosophy and literature, Khora will be of special interest to those in the burgeoning field of "space studies"(architecture, urbanism, design).

Sarah Osborne has spent her life dreaming of Simon's touch. But dukes do not long for lady's maids-or so Sarah believes, until a stolen kiss sparks a passion that could be her ultimate undoing. As the couple begins a forbidden romance, a cunning enemy plots to destroy the duke and everything he loves. Now, caught in a blackmailer's web, Simon faces an agonizing choice: sacrifice his family's future or break Sarah's heart. There are no coincidences. Aurelie Bredin, a beautiful Parisian restaurateur, is sure of this truth. On a gloomy Friday in November, when Aurelie is feeling depressed after a breakup, she discovers a novel entitled "The Smiles of Women" in a quaint bookshop on the Ile-St.-Louis. Astonishingly, her restaurant and she herself are featured in its pages. After reading the entire book in one night, Aurelie wishes more than anything to meet the author of the novel because she is convinced that, without even realizing it, he has saved her life. However, her wish proves to be a difficult, almost impossible, endeavour. All attempts to contact the attractive but shy English author through his French publishers are The Knitter's Year ebook pdf blocked by the company's gruff editor-in-chief, Andre, who only with great reluctance forwards Aurelie's enthusiastic letter. But Aurelie refuses to give up. One day, a response from the reclusive author actually lands in her mail box, but the encounter that eventually takes place is completely different from what she had ever imagined.

The Knitter's Year

Description

Anyone who has caught the knitting bug will know that knitters never like to be without a project on the go. So what could be better than a compendium of 52 handknit designs that will take every knitter all the way through an entire year? Each of the projects in The Knitter's Year has been designed to be made in a week or less, with some being as quick to knit up as a rainy afternoon or a couple of evenings. Designs include homewares, accessories and things to wear. They range from a sumptuous yet simple chunky scarf, which takes a few balls of yarn, to the adorable Easter-bunny egg cosies, which can be made using remnants of yarn leftover from larger projects. Divided into the four seasons, the book features spring-time ideas such as a floral corsage and some fingerless gloves, plus homeware items including a shelf edging and lacy bolster cushion. Following are summery projects like a beach bag, simple tank and string shopping bag. Moving into Autumn, Debbie gives ideas for a back-to-school iPod cover and simple beret and scarf. Finally Winter, where knits really come into their own with snug socks, slippers, and even ideas for Christmas gifts and tree decorations. The collection provides a blissful year of inspiration from a leading knitter to either make for yourself or to give as a special gift.

Embrace Suze s groundbreaking philosophy that you are worth more than your money and understand the true meaning of wealth so you can live a life without regrets. Tra-la-laaa! The wait is over! Dav Pilkey--ahem--we mean, George and Harold, the authors of SUPER DIAPER The Brass Verdict free pdf BABY, are back with their second epic novel! Now with super-cool foil covers! Shiny! Fun! In the Days of Caesar is a constructive political theology formulated in sustained dialogue with the Pentecostal and charismatic renewal one of the most vibrant religious movements at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Amos Yong here argues that the many tongues, practices, and gifts of renewal Christianity offer up new resources for thinking about how Christian community can engage and transform the social, political, and economic structures of the world. Yong has three goals here. First he seeks to correct stereotypes of Pentecostalism, both political and theological. Secondly he aims to provoke Pentecostals to reflect theologically from out of the depths of their own Pentecostalism rather than merely to adopt some framework for theological or political self-understanding. Finally Yong shows that a distinctively Pentecostal form of theological reflection is not a parochial activity but has constructive potential to illuminate Christian belief and practice. This book s engagement with political theology from a Pentecostal perspective is the first of its kind."

Alain de Botton: The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work

The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work

Description

The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work is Alain de Botton's lucid exploration of a subject key to most of our lives. Why do so many of us love or hate our work? How has it come to dominate our lives? And what should we do about it? Work makes us. Without it we are at a loss; in work we hope to have a measure of control over our lives. Yet for many of us, work is a straitjacket from which we cannot free ourselves. Criss-crossing the world to visit workplaces and workers both ordinary and extraordinary, and drawing on the wit and wisdom of great artists, writers and thinkers, Alain de Botton here explores our love-hate relationship with our jobs. He poses and answers little and big questions: from what should I do with my life? to what will I have achieved when I retire? The Pleasure and Sorrows of Work will not only explain why it is we do what we do all day, but its sympathy, humour and insight seeks to help us make the most of it. 'De Botton's wit and powers of ironic observation are on display throughout what is a stylish and original book. The workplace brings out the best in his writing' Sunday Times 'Timely, wonderfully readable. The newly appointed Sgt. Dalgliesh is drawn into a case that is "pure Agatha Christie." . . . A "pedantic, respectable, censorious" clerk's secret taste for pornography is only the first reason he finds for not coming forward as a witness to a murder . . . A best-selling crime novelist describes the crime she herself was involved in fifty years earlier . . . Dalgliesh's godfather implores him to reinvestigate a notorious murder that might ease the godfather's mind about an inheritance, but which will reveal a truth that even the supremely upstanding Adam Dalgliesh will keep to himself. Each of these stories is as playful as it is ingeniously The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work pdf plotted, the author's sly humor as evident as her hallmark narrative elegance and shrewd understanding of some of the most complex--not to say the most damning--aspects of human nature. A treat for P. D. James's legions of fans and anyone who enjoys the pleasures of a masterfully wrought whodunit.

How to be Interesting: An Instruction Manual

Description

Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies download pdf

Ben Macintyre: Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies

Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies

Description

In his celebrated bestsellers "Agent Zigzag "and "Operation Mincemeat," Ben Macintyre told the dazzling true stories of a remarkable WWII double agent and of how the Allies employed a corpse to fool the Nazis and assure a decisive victory. In "Double Cross," Macintyre returns with the untold story of the grand final deception of the war and of the extraordinary spies who achieved it. On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy and suffered an astonishingly low rate of casualties. D-Day was a stunning military accomplishment, but it was also a masterpiece of trickery. Operation Fortitude, which protected and enabled the invasion, and the Double Cross system, which specialized in turning German spies into double agents, deceived the Nazis into believing that the Allies would attack at Calais and Norway rather than Normandy. It was the most sophisticated and successful deception operation ever carried out, ensuring that Hitler kept an entire army awaiting a fake invasion, saving thousands of lives, and securing an Allied victory at the most critical juncture in the war. The story of D-Day has been told from the point of view of the soldiers who fought in it, the tacticians who planned it, and the generals who led it. But this epic event in world history has never before been told from the perspectives of the key individuals in the Double Cross System. These include its director (a brilliant, urbane intelligence officer), a colorful assortment of MI5 handlers (as well as their counterparts in Nazi intelligence), and the five spies who formed Double Cross's nucleus: a dashing Serbian playboy, a Polish fighter-pilot, a bisexual Peruvian party girl, a deeply eccentric Spaniard with a diploma in chicken farming and a volatile Frenchwoman, whose obsessive love for her pet dog very nearly wrecked the entire plan. The D-Day spies were, without question, one of the oddest military units ever assembled, and their success depended on the delicate, dubious relationship between spy and spymaster, both German and British. Their enterprise was saved from catastrophe by a shadowy sixth spy whose heroic sacrifice is revealed here for the first time. With the same depth of research, eye for the absurd and masterful storytelling that have made Ben Macintyre an international bestseller, "Double Cross "is a captivating narrative of the spies who wove a web so intricate it ensnared Hitler's army and carried thousands of D-Day troops across the Channel in safety.
